A good hunting knife is more than just a tool – it's a reliable companion on every stalk, every hunt, and when processing game. Whether for gutting, dispatching, skinning, or other tasks in the field – quality, ergonomics, and functionality are key. At PUMA, you'll find traditional hunting knives based on decades of experience and developed by hunters for hunters.

What makes a good hunting knife?

Hunting knives must meet a variety of requirements. A sturdy blade, safe handling, stainless steel with good edge retention, and an ergonomic handle design are essential. The materials – from high-quality staghorn and fine woods to modern plastics – contribute to both functionality and aesthetics.

Models with hunting blades or tender blades are particularly prized, but universal knives like our PUMA white hunter also enjoy cult status. They combine robustness with versatile usability.

Secure storage is also crucial: A perfectly fitting leather sheath protects not only the knife, but also the wearer.

Below is an overview of different types of hunting knives.

Butcher's knife
Used for gutting and butchering game. It usually has a wide, rounded blade, often with a gutting hook. A non-slip handle ensures safety when working with wet hands.

Interception knife
Used for the lethal thrust to dispatch injured or trapped game. It has a long, slender, usually double-edged blade and is particularly robust for use on large game.

Boar spear
A traditional hunting spear used for dispatching wild boar. It has a long, straight blade with a crossbar (guard) and is now mostly used for ceremonial purposes.

Woad leaf
A heavy, robust all-purpose knife with a wide blade. It is suitable for dispatching, skinning, and butchering game and is a classic German hunting knife.

Hunting nicker (nicker)
A small, pointed knife used for the so-called "nicker" stab to the back of the game's neck. Traditionally worn as part of hunting attire, especially used for roe deer.

Skinner knife
It has a strongly curved blade that facilitates skinning without damaging the underlying meat. It is ergonomically designed for precise work.

Ring knife
Special knives for ruffling, i.e., for cleanly severing the anus during bowel movements. Usually with a small, pointed or curved blade, hygienic and easy to clean.
