How does the Belgian whetstone work?
When sharpening tool steel, the burr created during grinding is removed and the cutting edge is polished. During this process, the following happens to the Belgian whetstone moistened with water:
When the blade of the tool rubs over the uniformly fine-grained surface of the stone, the softer components of the sedimentary rock such as ash, clay, and mica are first detached by the abrasion, and the embedded garnets protrude slightly. Then they too detach from the parent rock (this is called grain breakout) and, with the water, form a thin paste, the grinding paste.
During the uniform grinding motion, the rounded garnets penetrate slightly into the steel and remove fine shavings from the metal. However, the hardness of the garnet causes very sharp abrasion, but due to the round shape of the spheres, no cracks are created, but rather a fine polish. This combination of speed and fineness is unique worldwide. It allows for a cutting sharpness to be achieved with which, for example, wood fibers can be cleanly cut across the grain.
