What is POM Commando Stag?
The history of the material:
Our story with the Puma SGB Commando Stag knives began with a special inspiration: the desire for an authentic antler handle that reflects natural aesthetics while also being durable, hygienic, and robust. It was important to us that the handle not only be visually appealing but also withstand the demanding conditions of hunting and outdoor use. An additional advantage is that it can be easily cleaned in the dishwasher for hygienic purposes.
In the early 2000s, the prices for genuine antler rose considerably, significantly increasing the cost of manufacturing knives with high-quality antler handles. We also became aware that the rising demand for antler material could have negative consequences – such as poaching or black market activity. Therefore, we searched for an alternative material that offered the same natural appearance as staghorn.
Our solution was the development of a specially engineered POM/Delrin material, which we call 'Commando Stag'. This plastic was developed in close collaboration with our partners in the USA and thoroughly tested. It combines the natural look and texture of staghorn with the advantages of a modern plastic. The material not only feels pleasant to the touch but also remains stable under extreme temperatures and humidity: it doesn't shrink or swell. This makes our knives suitable for use even in the most adverse conditions – in all kinds of weather. Furthermore, the handle scales can easily withstand cleaning in the dishwasher.
The decisive impetus for the development of Commando Stag came from a remarkable story: A man from Colorado discovered an extraordinary moose antler – an impressive piece that held pride of place in his "man cave" for years. This antler inspired a friend and hunter named Bob Carpenter (the owner of our American branch) to develop a precise replica – a perfect symbiosis of nature and modern technology. After numerous tests and fine-tuning, our synthetic "Commando Stag" material was finally created. It looks like real antler, feels like naturally grown material, and has been incorporated into various classic knife designs – models such as the Skinner and Bowie, as well as newer variations like the PUMA Elk, Coyote, and Blacktail.
Our Puma SGB knives (SGB = Sharp German Blade) with "Commando Stag" handles are made of German steel (1.4116) with a hardness of 55–57 Rockwell. They are robust, reliable, and come with a high-quality suede sheath. We also offer PUMA XP Pig Stickers with Commando Stag handles.
At PUMA, we are proud to have created Commando Stag, a licensed, affordable and durable alternative to knife handles made from genuine staghorn.
Rooted in German hunting tradition and history, we still offer knives with genuine European staghorn, handcrafted in our factory in Solingen.
