Product description
The Evolution of the Knife: The eventful history of humankind is inextricably linked to the development of cutting tools. Due to the different developmental stages of various peoples, the transitions between the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages were fluid and staggered. However, bladed weapons found their way into every culture and, often adorned with elaborate decorations, served as status symbols for their owners. From the very beginning, it was essential for survival to possess tools for producing food and clothing. This required butchering hunted game and processing its components. Our ancestors initially used sharp-edged stones for this purpose.
By hewing flint, the first "knife," the hand axe, was created. This could be used for cutting, scraping, splitting, sharpening, and as a weapon. Humans had thus reached a stage of evolution where they could use a self-made tool purposefully.
As technology evolved, humans learned to mine and process metals. Copper was initially used for knife making. It could be heated, poured into molds, and then shaped. This new smelting process made it possible to create complex shapes, allowing blades and handles to form an integral unit. However, these cutting tools were not hard and robust enough to perform all tasks, so stone tools continued to be used as well.
Subsequently, it became possible to add tin to copper and thus produce bronze. This bronze possessed excellent properties and completely replaced stone as a blade material. The smelting and melting of iron ore eventually led to the production of iron and later – through the addition of carbon – steel. The density and achievable hardness of the material could be controlled through forging and subsequent heat treatment, thereby optimizing its wear resistance and durability. Longer blades, for example for swords, could now be produced that exhibited both hardness and flexibility.
The PUMA "Evolution" set consists of three blades: Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age. Each blade features an engraving representing its respective era. The blades are packaged in a high-quality wooden box and come with a certificate. The first edition is limited to 100 pieces. Each set is numbered .
PUMA “Stone” = hand axe
The hand axe originated around 1.5 million years ago, during the Stone Age. It was a double-sided, almond-shaped stone with a rounded base and a pointed end. The "Stone" model is a reminiscence of humanity's first knife.
PUMA “Bronze” = Dagger with short handle
From the 3rd millennium BC onwards, some peoples were able to produce cutting tools from copper. By adding about ten percent tin to the alloy, copper could be cast into bronze, which could then be used for knife making. The "Bronze" model is based on a dagger from this period.
PUMA “Iron” = Knife with long handle
Iron knives appeared as early as the Late Bronze Age, gradually replacing bronze knives. Knives produced by smelting iron are documented from the 17th century BC onwards. This technological advancement reached Europe approximately 2,800 years ago, thus marking the beginning of the Iron Age in this region. The "Iron" model corresponds to the shape of a Celtic knife.
