Interesting facts about PUMA

The puma on the hunt
The history of the PUMA knife factory dates back to 1769. Our traditional manufactory existed under the founding Lauterjung family as early as 1769, even before the French Revolution. At that time, blades for razors, pocket knives, hair scissors, hunting knives, and sabers were sharpened on natural whetstones using the water power of the Wupper River.
After the introduction of the steam engine, which was crucial for knife production, and the later longed-for end of the Second World War, there was another momentous event for the PUMA factory.
Oswald von Frankenberg und Ludwigsdorf (1915-1986) became an employee at the PUMA factory. This laid the foundation for the worldwide success of PUMA hunting knives today.
He was an experienced hunter who initiated the decisive shift "away from household knives and towards practical hunting, fishing, and utility knives." In cooperation with German and international hunting experts, he created knives whose well-thought-out, practical design still enjoys a legendary reputation worldwide.

PUMA Quality Management
Hunting equipment must effectively combine quality and functionality. PUMA's quality management system guarantees this. The collaboration between experienced, world-renowned designers and seasoned PUMA employees forms the foundation of this approach. This strategy is further enhanced by the continuous monitoring of all production processes. The introduction of the PUMA Guarantee Number System in 1965 was groundbreaking for these procedures, enabling the precise traceability of every single knife. The result is a comprehensive range of knives of the highest quality.

A sensible concept through suitable accessories
For each group in the entire PUMA product range, in addition to basic knife care and sharpening accessories such as metal polish, honing steels, and oil and whetstones, further accessories specifically tailored to the intended use are offered. PUMA also offers strops and strop paste to complement its straight razors. Therefore, it goes without saying that the collector's and luxury knives are delivered in elaborately crafted presentation cases with a certificate of authenticity.

Often copied - never equaled!
The model White Hunter The international series was developed in 1956 in cooperation with the East African Hunting Organization. This extremely robust all-purpose knife has a 15 cm long, thinly ground blade, yet it still has a durable edge for rough use.
On the back is a convex axe blade for striking. The White Hunter enjoyed worldwide success, and after the expiration of the PUMA patent, the design was copied by almost every knife-producing nation.

Simple taste - or PUMA special editions
Oscar Wilde's saying, "I have simple tastes, only the best of everything," applies to every PUMA product, but is particularly apt for the exclusive collector's, special, and luxury editions. These knives are crafted with exceptional workmanship, and renowned artists, committed to PUMA quality, guarantee masterful engraving and carving by hand. PUMA special models are coveted prestige and collector's items worldwide, status symbols that appreciate in value and reflect the refined taste of their owners. Such models are delivered in luxury presentation cases befitting their value.
A frequently used base model for PUMA special editions is the locking knife from the 4-Star series. The 4-Star unique pieces by renowned animal painter Arno Hopp are also meticulously handcrafted. The white Micarta handle scales are adorned with color engravings in a novel scrimshaw style, demonstrating exceptional artistic talent and a deep understanding of both traditional engraving and modern printing techniques. By layering multiple colors, painterly depictions of animals in landscapes are created. The motif is constructed using the copperplate engraving technique and hand-colored in an impressionistic style. The result is a collection of unique pieces with a painterly depth, reminiscent of 17th-century ivory paintings and snuffboxes.
PUMA's commitment to quality is evident in these special knives as well. Although PUMA special knives are almost too precious for everyday use, they are exquisite works of art, complemented by limited-edition models that increase in value over the years. Each of these unique pieces, however, is also a fully functional and practical knife.
