Things to know about PUMA
The PUMA on the hunting
Since 1769, before the French Revolution, the PUMA brand has existed. At that time blades for razors, pocket knives, shears or hunting knives and swords have been sharpened on natural sharpening stones, taking advantage of the hydraulic water power. Important for the knife production as for the industry in general was the invention of the steamengine. After the second world war there was another important event for PUMA.
Oswald von Frankenberg und Ludwigsdor (1915-1986) entered the company. He was an experienced hunter who initiated the new PUMA policy "no more household knives, but quality hunting, fishing and outdoor knives". In Co-operation with German and foreign huntign experts, knives of world-wide reputation and practical use have been developed. The most important piece of equipment for a hunter is, apart from a good rifle and field glasses, the hunting knife. The best-known and most-wanted knife among the German hunting folders is still the Universal-Jagdtaschenmesser (item no. 210959). This model has been designed and developed in co-operation with Top forest master Frevert, former head of the state hunting ground Rominten and President of the international Bloodhound Federation, with whom PUMA designed several hunting knives.
The PUMA quality management
Hunting knives have to connect quality and useful effects in a sensful way. This is guaranteed by the PUMA quality management. The co-operation between experienced and world famous designer's, for example, Mr. H. P. Knoop, Mr. P. Herbst or Mr. H. P. Jermer, and the experienced PUMA employees is the foundation-stone for it. This strategy is continued by a permanent controlling of all manufacturing steps. A signpost for this procedure was the PUMA Guarantee-number-system established 1965, which was responsible to pursue each knife. Result is a wide range of knives in an extra ordinary quality.
The PUMA product variety
PUMA's range of products has grown continuosly from gereration to generation. The knives usually reflect a trend and are selected according to their purpose. The design as well is very important. There are the following knife categories.
- hunting, scout and trekking knives
- hunting folders
- sporting folders, outdoor, folding and fishing knives
- collector's knives
- accessories, sheaths and pouches
Correct accessories
Basic accessories like metal polish, sharpening steel, oil and sharpeningstones complete the PUMA product range. PUMA collector's and luxury knives are delivered in elegant wooden and tin boxes with a certificate.
Copied but never surpassed
The White Hunter of the International Series has been developed in co-operation with the East-African hunting organisation in 1956. This superb all-purpose knife has a 15 cm, thin-ground blade with a stable cutting edge. The back may be used to chop. The knife is still a world-wide success and the design has been copied by nearly all knife manufacturing nations.
The simple taste - or PUMA special knives
Oscar Wilde's maxim "I habe a simple taste - only the best of everything" may be applied to each PUMA product, but especially to collector's knives and special commissions. Excellent workman-ship and well-known artists guarantee brilliant engravings and carvings, all hand-made. The special knives are much sought after as a valuable object and status symbol world-wide, representing the good taste of their owners.
Such models are delivered in luxury wooden boxes in accordance to their value. A very often used model for a PUMA collector's knife is the folding knife of the 4-Star series. This model has an excellent design and a simple shapa and is the ideal model for luxury versions. Handmade are the unique 4-Star knives of the well-known painter A. Hopp. The white Micarta scales are treated with a new Scrimshaw technique. It required great talent and a profound knowledge of old engraving techniques and modern printing techniques to achieve the coloured engravings. Several colour layers compose a picturesque landscape. The motif is hand-coloured and the painting reminds of old ivory paintings of the 17th century, seen on medallions and tobaccojars.
And also these knives are showing the PUMA Quality Management. Although the PUMA collector's knives are to valuable for the daily use, and although they are treasures of extraordinary quality, completed with limited series which are growing in their value every year of existence, their are still representing a useful and complete knife.
